LANTZ: Quinn MacDonald and Jesse Hamer scored twice and Ryan Huestis stood tall again between the pipes as the East Hants Junior Penguins took first blood in their best-of-seven series with Hants County rival, Valley Maple Leafs.

The Pens scored twice in the first and second and erupted with four in the final stanza for the 8-0 in an intense game that was played before about an estimated 200 fans in the Keith Miller Arena at the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz.

Despite missing two of their top players—Matt and Adam Peruzza, who are away—East Hants came out of the gate ready to play, and both teams were hitting the body hard much to the delight of the players on the bench and the fans in the stands.

Also scoring for the Pens were Mark Vokey; Kyle Randall; Lucio Williams; and David Martino. Assists were credited to Jeff Connors with three assists; Alex Anthony with a pair; while single helpers were supplied by MacDonald; Vokey; Devon Rose; Jacob Roberts; and Liam Rappoldt.

Huestis turned away 36 pucks sent his way. Meanwhile, the Pens chased Valley’s Chris Clokie from the net after he gave up five goals on 23 shots in 52:40 of work. Brett Davies stopped six of nine shots in relief.

Game two in the series is scheduled to take place Sunday in Windsor at 2:30 p.m. Game three is Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. in Lantz, and Game four is Feb. 23 in Windsor.
