INDIAN BROOK: The fire chief with the Indian Brook Volunteer Fire Department has a made a plea to those in his community.

Joey Sack posted on his Facebook wall asking residents of Sipeken’katik First Nation to stop making grass fires.

“We don’t have the man power to be putting them out all the time,” said Sack. “We have other Departments from other communities coming out to put the fires out which is leaving them short if they get an emergency.”

The plea comes after a spat of recent grass fires, including one that destroyed an abandoned mobile home. In that instance, fire crews from Shubenacadie, Milford, Stewiacke, Nine Mile River, and Lantz had been paged.

Sack is asking the community to be watchful for who maybe setting the fires.

“We need the community to help the fire department out by letting one of us know if you see who the person is lighting the fires,” he said.
