ENFIELD: A defenceman from Enfield has played a key role in helping his Major Midget team capture the Atlantic title and a berth to the TELUS Cup national championship.
Zach Byard, who is a Halifax Moosehead prospect drafted last summer, supplied great defence on the back end for his Halifax McDonalds as they defeated Kensington Wild in the Atlantic final 4-1 in Charlottetown.
With the win, the Macs now head to Thunder Bay, Ont. to battle the best major midget teams from across the country at the TELUS Cup. Some of the games from the tournament will be broadcast on TSN, including the championship final.
Byard had no goals and two assists in five games played for the Macs at the Atlantics.
During the regular season, Byard sniped home six goals and 23 points in 35 games, missing just one game in the 36 game season. That included two man advantage tallies.
In the playoffs, he had four goals and four assists in 10 games. Two of the goals came on the power-play.
The TELUS Cup national championship is set for April 22-28 in Thunder Bay, Ont.
