MILLER, Grace Lillian – Age 93 of Shubenacadie East passed away March 19, 2017 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. An overwhelming feeling of loss accompanies the passing of the glue and the light of our family. Grace was born in 1923 in Dartmouth to Gladys Wilson and Earnest Ackles. Orphaned when quite young, she was sent to a work farm in Ontario. After enduring hardships there, she came home and at the age of 16 started working as a touch up artist at Maritime Photo Engravers. Grace left that job to marry Harris, her beloved husband of 65 years. Together they raised four children; her family was her life. Grace was talented at painting, cooking, sewing, knitting, baking and played a little piano. Gardening was a passion and a necessity. She was a gentle and kind woman who loved to swim in Porters Lake with her dog Brandy and family every summer. Always giving, always generous, no one left her home with an empty stomach or lonely heart. Late in life she doted on her pet sheep and cooked meals fit for kings in her country kitchen. She loved flowers, toads and cows and fed the birds every winter. Always dignified, she never went out in public unless dressed up. We were given the gift of a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and a beautiful woman of great strength and determination. A light may have gone out here on earth but there is a bright new one in heaven and it will continue to guide us – thank you Mom. She is survived by sons, David (Rita), John (Jeanne); daughters, Donna (Freeman), Dale (Victor); four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Ron, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, Harris; sisters, Marjorie, Helen, Florence; brothers, Arthur, Kenneth, William; two grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. Thank you to all the staff for their excellent care and kindness during her illness and passing. Condolences, words of comfort and memories of Grace may be shared with the family at
